Trucking Industry Divided Over Speed Limiters

When large trucks are involved in accidents in Tennessee, they can often be extremely serious and sometimes deadly. While there can be multiple causes of such accidents, speed can sometimes be a factor. The trucking industry is regulated by the federal government and some believe that regulating how fast large tractor trailers can travel can make the roads safer for everyone.

According to Autoblog, in 2016, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration proposed a rule that would require trucks to have devices that would limit how fast they can go. The maximum speed under the proposal would be between 60 and 68 miles per hour. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is also supportive of this measure, as are a number of organizations within the trucking industry.

However, there are others that oppose the implementation of speed limiters. Reducing the rate at which trucks travel may not actually make roads safer, points out Trucks.com. Truck accidents are so deadly because of the weight of the trucks, not because of how fast they are going. In fact, 60 percent of deadly truck crashes occur in areas where the speed limit was not higher than 55 mph, and 80 percent occur in areas where the top speed limit was 65 mph.

If other vehicles on the road are able to travel at a faster rate than trucks, it can lead to several problems. On smaller highways, it can create congestion, some argue. If a truck wants to pass another truck but can only go slightly faster than it, both lanes of traffic then become impassable for cars and other vehicles. In addition, slower trucks will also lead to increased costs for consumers. It remains to be seen whether the proposal will move forward to become a rule.
